Peluso receives an invitation to the Global Forum on Law, Justice and Development

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

The associate Vice-President for Legal Affairs of the World Bank, Hassane Cisse, delivered today (08/30) to the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil (STF), Cezar Peluso, an invitation for the Supreme Court to take part in the Global Forum on Law, Justice and Development, a World Bank initiative to be launched soon.

It refers to a permanent global forum, similar to the World Economic Forum that will facilitate exchange and sharing of knowledge between international organizations, universities, lawyers and judges in order to identify, discuss and propose innovative solutions for legal development on a global, national and regional level.

According to the document presented by the World Bank, the forum aims to "promote a better understanding of the role of law and justice in the development process through structured dialogues of relevant South-South and North-South actors, as well as a research agenda for promoting the co-generation of knowledge as it includes academic groups and think tanks, in addition to strengthening and better integrating the legal and judicial institutions in the development process through selected training initiatives and through an open repository of knowledge ".

According to Hassane Cisse, the idea came from discussions that took place during last week's edition of Law, Justice and Development, held in Washington in November 2010 and featured a day dedicated to Brazil and to the reform of the Brazilian Judiciary (Brazil's Day). On that occasion, the World Bank director for Brazil, Makhtar Diop, said the "virtualization of processes is an example of how one country can solve the problem of improving judicial service to the public." According to the director, in many countries where the World Bank is represented, timespan of judicial dispute resolution is a problem that could be solved through virtualization. "I really think Brazil is the only country that has a totally paperless system", Diop said.

Hassane Cisse added that the experience was so rewarding that this year's edition will feature a day devoted to China
