He graduated in Law in Recife in 1864, remarkable as an orator and abolitionist.

In Pernambuco, he kept a printer to print his articles, booklets and newspapers inspired by positivism, in defense of secular thought and German monist theory which, broadly speaking, supports the unity of reality as a whole, creating identity between mind and body.He also founded the movement that became known as "School of Recife", Brazilian main philosophical movement of the second half of the nineteenth century.
In addition to being philosopher.
