Representatives of Bar Associations visit the Supreme Federal Court

A delegation of ten representatives of Bar Associations of Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries visited the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) on the afternoon of Tuesday. These lawyers are in Brasilia to attend the taking of office of the new President of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association, Marcus Vinicius Furtado, and took advantage of their stay in the city to visit the Supreme Court and learn more about the organization and functioning of the Brazilian Judiciary.

During the afternoon, the lawyers attended a session of the First Panel of STF, talked with Justice Luiz Fux, president of the First Panel, and Justice Marco Aurélio, and even attended to a lecture conducted by the Supreme Federal Court Advisory for International Affairs about the characteristics of the Judicial Power in Brazil.

Claudia de Freitas, member of the Portuguese Bar Association, is Brazilian, but has been worked as a lawyer in Lisbon for 25 years. For the first time in Brasilia, she thinks the city and its institutions convey a sense of competence. "Everything impressed me, the amplitude of the city, the appearance of competence and performed work is very clear," said Claudia. A visit to the Supreme Federal Court and to the Federal Council of OAB, according to the lawyer, will promote many topics to dialogue with her colleagues in Lisbon. "We had a lecture with an organic overview of the whole Brazilian Justice. In Portugal, for example, there is no Public Defender. All of this will instigate many discussions," she added.

The delegation has representatives on the boards of Uruguay, Portugal, Spain, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mercosur and the Ibero-American Union. These countries and Organizations are comprised by the following Supreme Courts’ mechanisms of international cooperation, in which the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court is also member: Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Portuguese Speaking Countries - CJCPLP, which includes, among others, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde and Portugal; Ibero-American Conference on Constitutional Justice, which comprise the constitutional justice in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in America and Europe, and Permanent Forum of the Supreme Courts of MERCOSUR.
