Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa attends a Conference about press freedom in Costa Rica

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa, of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), attends today (2) the World Press Freedom Day International Conference at San José, Costa Rica. The conference is promoted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This Friday (3), Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa will be the keynote speaker of the 2nd Plenary Session, organized by the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), which will address the issue of impunity. Among the major topics of discussion are the relation between impunity on crimes committed against journalists and human rights defenders and the violence in general, the state of impunity in each country and on a global level, and the ways of facing the problem and strengthening the law enforcement and of improving the researches done on the extension, visibility and the consequences of impunity.

According to the organizers, in the past years, only one in ten crimes committed against journalists and communication professionals had its authors convicted. The real effect of impunity is the self-censorship and the undermining of the judicial system’s reliability. The objective of this plenary session is to discuss the state of impunity in a global level and the measures adopted by governments and institutions to reduce it.

Besides Chief Justice Barbosa, the plenary session will count with the participation of Representatives of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, from Philippines, of the President of the College of Journalists of Honduras and of the Media Director of the TVN Channel 2, from Panama.

Press Freedom

The World Press Freedom Day is a global event celebrated on March, 3, on more than 100 countries, with one of them (this year, Costa Rica) holding the main events of the celebration. The date was chosen in 1993 by the United Nation’s General Assembly (UN) as an opportunity to debate that matter all over the world, defend the media’s independence against attacks and honor those journalists who lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
