Luís Roberto Barroso takes office as Justice of the Supreme Court

In a solemn session held in the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court's (STF) Plenary, this Wednesday, the lawyer Luís Roberto Barroso took office as the new Court’s Justice. He assumed the position left by Justice Ayres Britto, who retired in November of the last year.

In the swearing in ceremony, Barroso was conducted to the Plenary by Justices Teori Zavascki and Celso de Mello, the newer and the senior members of the Court, as it traditionally occurs. After the National Anthem’s performance by singer Ellen Oléria, Justice Barroso performed the tenure commitment and was declared sworn in by the STF’s President, Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa.

Also took part at the ceremony the Presidents of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, and of the Chamber of Deputies, Henrique Alves, the minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo, the senator José Sarney, retired STF’s Justices, judicial courts’ presidents, among other authorities, besides relatives and friends of the new Justice.
