I/A Court R.H. and STF announce extraordinary session in conjunction with the Brazilian Judiciary

On Tuesday (22th) at 5:00pm, during a press conference, the Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Joaquim Barbosa  and the President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Diego Garcia-Sayán, will announce the 49th Extraordinary Session of the Inter-American Court (I/A Court H.R.) to be held between 11 and 15 November in Brasilia. The goal of the session is to bring the Inter-American Court closer to the Brazilian people, one of the receivers of their decisions. The press conference will take place in the auditorium of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), located in Annex I of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in Brasilia.

The special meeting will analyze the case of the missing persons in the seizure of Colombia's Palace of Justice by military forces in response to the action of the M19 political group which occurred in November 1985. The examination of witnesses, expert, the parties' arguments will take place in the Court's open session, with representation from the missing persons' relatives, experts, access to military files, parties' oral arguments, including the state of Colombia's representation. The prosecution deals with the recognition of responsibilities, the existence of missing persons, the victims and their families' reparation, and the recovery of the historical memory of the country.

Established 20 years ago,  the Inter-American Court of Human Rights is headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica and is composed by seven judges, including the Brazilian Roberto de Figueiredo Caldas. The I/A Court H.R. met in Brazil for the first time in 2006. The extraordinary session of November will be the second meeting held in Brasil.
