Justice Joaquim Barbosa attends seminary at the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (updated)

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Joaquim Barbosa, will participate, next Monday (7), in the opening ceremony of “The Freedom of Expression and the Judiciary Power” seminary at the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJ-RJ).Geared towards magistrates, journalists, students of Law and Journalism, the event will prolong until April 8th at the Plenary of Lâmina Central, at Dom Manuel Street, s/nº - 10th floor, Center. Entrance will be free of charge, but the seats are limited and subject to registration confirmation, considering the auditorium’s capacity.

The seminary is part of the activities to be developed due to the established partnership, in late 2013, between the STF, the United Nations’ (UN) Special Rapporteurs on Freedom of Expression and the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The subjects to be addressed are violence against journalists, obligation to protect and investigate committed crimes, access to information and to the Internet, Judiciary Power, Criminal Law and Freedom of Expression.

The opening ceremony will be attended by the TJ-RJ’s President, Judge Leila Mariano, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Frank la Rue, UNESCO’s representative in Brazil, Lucien Muñoz and the Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Catalina Botero.
