STF is elected president of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Portuguese Language Countries for the next biennium

Justice Dias Toffoli, representing the Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Joaquim Barbosa, is participating between June 3rd and June 5th of 2014 in the 3rd Assembly of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of the Portuguese-Language Countries (CJCPLP) in Lobito, province of Benguela in Angola. The 3rd Assembly was attended by seven of the eight members of the CJCPLP. The subject of this edition is "Constitutional Jurisdiction and Protection of Fundamental Rights". The Supreme Federal Court was elected on the 4th, by unanimity, to the presidency of the CJCPLP for the next two years.

The Conference, which was formed in 2009 during a meeting held in Brasilia, is held every two years and aims to organize judicial, jurisprudential and scientific cooperation. Besides Brazil and Mozambique, other members of the Conference are Portugal, Angola, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and East Timor.

The 1st Assembly of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of the Portuguese Language Countries was held in 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal. At that first meeting, the Conference Statute was approved, the effort in deepening a common constitutional culture shared by lusophone countries was suggested and the city of Maputo to host the second meeting was selected.

The 2nd Assembly of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of the Portuguese Language Countries was held in Maputo, Mozambique's capital. At the occasion, Justice Dias Toffoli spoke on the functioning of the Electoral Justice in Brazil, in his presentation on the main debated subject at the 2nd Meeting of the CJCPLP, "Powers of Constitutional Courts and Supreme Courts on Electoral Matters." In addition, the Assembly approved the Brazilian design for its logo and the submitted version of the Conference's webpage. Furthermore, on behalf of the STF, the Justice proposed the creation of  the Tobias Barreto Program for the exchange of magistrates of Portuguese Language Countries, which was promptly approved and at the same year the STF held the 1st edition of the Tobias Barreto Program on the 8th, 9th and 10th of October. Representatives from Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, Mozambique and East Timor, as well as Brazil participated. The topic of discussion was the autonomy of the Judiciary Power.

Participating in the Assembly were the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court, the Constitutional Court of Angola, the Supreme Court of Cape Verde, the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau, the Constitutional Council of Mozambique, the Constitutional Court of Portugal, the Supreme Court of Sao Tome and Principe and the Court of Appeals of East Timor.
