The Chief Justice of the STF attends official visit agenda on trip to China

In accordance to the official agenda on the People’s Republic of China, the Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Ricardo Lewandowski, was received  this Tuesday (31), at the Law School of the University of Beijim by members of the academic staff and students. On the presence of the School’s dean, Professor Zhang Shouwen, the minister lectured  on the Brazilian judicial system, emphasizing on the structure and the functioning of the Judicial Branch in the light of the Federal Constitution of 1988. By the end of the encounter, professor Zhang highlighted the interest of the School in deepen the bonds of academic cooperation and exchange with Brazil.

After that, minister Ricardo Lewandowski was received on the People’s Supreme Court of China by the vice-president of the institution, Shen Deyong, with whom he exchanged impressions on the positive unfolding of the cooperation between the Brazilian and Chinese Judicial Branches.

On Monday (30), the STF’s president and the president of the People’s Supreme Court of China signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation between the two Courts. The goal is the exchange of experiences that will help the modernization of the judicial system of both countries and the strengthening of cooperation between the Supreme Courts.

The encounter occurred on the city of Haikou, capital of the Chinese province of Hainan, and it was agreed the establishment, in a short term, of a BRICS common jurisprudence bank (group of countries composed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) on environmental matter, available for all people on the internet. It was also confirmed a seminar on law and development, in Brazil, in 2016, with the participation of judges and lawyers from Brazil and China.

On Sunday (29), minister Ricardo Lewandowski participated on a session on the 2015 Boao Forum for Asia with the goal of debating the role of the BRICS Judicial Branches on the control of environmental pollution. The president of the Chinese Supreme Court, Zhou Qiang, and judges of the Supreme Courts of Russia, India and South Africa also participated on the debates. The STF’s president highlighted that the Brazilian Federal Constitution dedicates an exclusive chapter to the environmental protection. He also highlighted the measures at the Judicial Branch disposal to fight and punish infractions to the environmental legislation.

The visit to China began on Saturday (28), when the minister attended the BRICS Forum of Justice, where he participated on the panel “Judicial Protection to Natural Resources”. At the occasion, the STF’s president approached the worries of Brazil with the management of water and emphasized the urge to adopt a protection system to the water basins and watersheds of the country. He also reminded that, as emerging countries, the BRICS countries should take the environmental protection as a highly connected to economic and social development.
