Political reform is the theme of Justice Roberto Barroso's lecture at Harvard

The Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), lectured on “Political Reform in Brazil: the possible agreements and means to achieve it”, in a panel at Harvard University, in the United States. In his lecture, the Minister explained the difficulties faced by the Brazilian political system, the goals that must lead a political reform and the different proposals related to the electoral system and the system of parties, as well as the campaign financing.

The lecture, presented on Friday (17), was divided in four chapters: 1) the Brazilian political system and its problems; 2) the main goals of a political reform; 3) the different proposals existent; and 4) Agreements, common points and possible conciliations.

During the panel, the Minister highlighted that “maybe it’s possible to build, in the Brazilian tradition, a middle path capable of helping a bit of each legit interest in question”. According to him, in case it’s not possible, “we must decide the matter by voting”. “And someone will win and someone will lose. That’s democracy”, he said.

Minister Luís Roberto Barroso has a degree, a doctorate and another post-graduation course by the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and a master’s degree by the Yale University, in the United States. He was also a guest professor at the Law School of Harvard, in 2011.
