Justice Edson Fachin took office at the Supreme Court


In formal session held at the Plenary of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), on Tuesday (16th), the lawyer Luiz Edson Fachin took office as the new Justice of Court. He takes the seat left by the Justice Joaquim Barbosa, who retired last year, in July.

At the ceremony, Fachin was conducted to the Plenary by Justices Luís Roberto Barroso and Celso de Mello, the youngest and the oldest member of the Court, as traditionally. After the execution of the national anthem by the Band of the Royal Marines, the Minister made the commitment and was sworn in by Chief Justice of the STF, Ricardo Lewandowski.

The Vice-President of the Republic, Michel Temer, representing President Dilma Rousseff, the Presidents of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, and of the Câmara, Eduardo Cunha, Minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo, the General Attorney of the Republic, Rodrigo Janot, the President of the Federal Council of the Bar Association of Brazil (OAB), Marcos Vinícius Furtado, retired ministers of the Supreme Court, presidents of courts, Governors and parliamentarians , among other authorities, as well as relatives and friends of the new Minister attended the ceremony.

Facing the Plenary, the new Minister took the oath to fulfill the duties of the position, "in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the Republic". The General-Director of the Secretariat of the Supreme Court, Amarildo Oliveira, did the reading of the Term of the ceremony, signed by the President of the Supreme Court, by the new Minister, by the General Attorney of the Republic and by the General-Director of the Secretariat of the STF.

After he read and signed the term, the Minister Ricardo Lewandowski declared sworn in the Minister Edson Fachin and invited him to take his place at the bench of the Ministers. Lewandowski recalled that the ceremonies of the Court Ministers "are characterized by simplicity”. The President of the Supreme Court welcomed Fachin and expressed the satisfaction of the pairs "for having, in the frames of the Supreme Court, a magistrate with his academic and professional qualifications". After the ceremony, the Minister Fachin and his relatives have received compliments from the guests.

Luiz Edson Fachin was born on February 8th, 1958, in Rondinha (RS). He is a professor of Civil Law at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), the same where he graduated in Law in 1980. He has masters and doctorate in Civil Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP), completed in 1986 and 1991, respectively. He did a postdoc in Canada, served as guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg, Germany, and also served as a visiting professor of King's College, in London. His name was announced by President Dilma Rousseff on April 14th and on May 19th, the Plenary of the Senate approved the nomination.
