Justice Lewandowski makes his presentation in the IACHR and meets the President of the Supreme Court of the United States

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) and president of the National Justice Council (CNJ), Ricardo Lewandowski, follows his agenda in Washington, United States. The commitments include actions related to promotion of fundamental and human rights guarantees to the Organization of American States (OAS) and a visit to Supreme Court of the United States.

In the morning, the Justice will present the Brazilian experience on promotion of Custody Hearings in session promoted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the OAS. The President of the CNJ and the STF will present the results of those hearings. The Custody Hearing guarantee to the caught red-handed to be almost immediately in the presence of a judge, avoiding unnecessary prisons and combating torture and ill-treatment. In addition, the hearings should reduce the prison population and save up $ 3.6 billion to the Brazilian public coffers.

The programming in OAS also includes the signing of a technical cooperation agreement with the IACHR, aiming the Brazilian judges’ improvement on human rights issues. The measure should improve the magistrates’ effectiveness on causes involving human rights and reduce the demands, on Commission, against Brazil.

Yet this Tuesday, Justice Ricardo Lewandowski shall meet the President of the Supreme Court of the United States, John G. Roberts Jr. The magistrates may exchange experiences about cases judged by the Courts and discuss the functioning of both Courts.

This Monday, Lewandowski signed an agreement with OAS in criminal area, to promote the exchange of good practice projects related to prison system and criminal execution. The Justice also participated in a discussion on Inter-American Dialogue, which is a non-profit institution, focused on public policy analysis, exchange of experiences and communication in matters of interest to the American continent. Justice spoke about the challenges of the Brazilian Judiciary in the current scenario, under the moderation of the President Emeritus of the institution, Peter Hakim.
