In meeting with Justice Cármen Lúcia, Syriac Catholic Patriarch speaks of the refugee issue

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Cármen Lúcia, met last Friday (4th) with the Syriac Catholic Patriarch, His Holiness Ignatius Youssef III Younan. The main subject of the meeting was the war in Syria and the Brazilian effort in uniting international forces to aid refugees.

During the talk, the Patriarch spoke of the disastrous framework imposed by the war on Syria, highlighting the need of international cooperation to aid citizens who suffer from the consequences of the conflict. He grieved the destruction of historical, scientific, cultural and commercial sites of Syrian society caused by the war, as well as the fragmentation of the Syriac Catholic community.

The business director of the Syrian Embassy in Brazil, who also attended the meeting, Ghassan Nseir, informed that the refugees need support also to solve daily problems, such as the revalidation of documents and university diplomas or even of documents destroyed during the war, as well as conditions to rent a house or having access to the labor market.

The Justice stressed that, in refugees issue, every help is important and must be prioritized, because “the idea of fraternity is at the base of our civilization”.
