Integration of labor rights is the theme of the Meeting of Supreme Courts

November 16, 2006

Brasília hosts the Permanent Forum of Supreme Courts of Mercosur and Associates on November 23 and 24, which brings together the presidents of the supreme judicial courts of the countries that are part of the Common Market of the Southern Cone (MERCOSUR), as well as associated and invited countries . Among the issues addressed, this edition of the event highlights labor relations within the framework of Mercosur.

Although it was created 15 years ago, for the justice of the Higher Labor Court (TST), Vantuil Abdala, Mercosur failed to make much progress with regard to workers' rights. "There are general principles on worker dignity, job security, non-discrimination, but no specific rules."

According to the jurist Jorge Fontoura, what hinders this regularization are the different laws of each of the countries. "Brazil and Uruguay have a legal position, and Argentina and Paraguay already have a different stance. It is necessary that in the not too distant future we unify these positions, mainly constitutional ones, if we want to deepen the integration ".

According to Fontoura, the meeting shows precisely "the judicial powers dialoguing and approaching in order to interact in favor of integration," he concluded.
