4th Meeting of Supreme Courts of Mercosur stimulates resolution of controversies

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

In continuity with the meetings of the Permanent Forum of Supreme Courts of Mercosur and Associates, institutionalized by the Charter of Brasilia, signed in November 2004, the fourth edition of the Mercosul Supreme Courts Meeting will be held on November 23 and 24.

According to the doctor in international law, Jorge Fontoura, "it is common in the integration that there arise commercial, political and economic conflicts. Every bloc, such as the European Union or NAFTA, must have a system of dispute settlement that is not confused with the national judiciary. Specific things that relate to integration, mainly trade, "he said, clarifying that the participation of the Judiciary in the institutional improvement of the bloc is essential to avoid controversy.

Headquartered in Brasilia, the forum is composed of the presidents of the supreme courts of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela, as well as associates and guests. The internal rules for the effective functioning of the forum are still under discussion.

"This regiment is being constructed and negotiated precisely in the sense that it is not an administrative impediment. He tries to follow the idea of Mercosur, which is simplicity, transparency and intergovernability. That is to say: less institutions, more production, more effectiveness, more construction, "added Jorge Fontoura.
