Supreme Court receives a visit from the President of Argentina

The President of the Republic of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, visited the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) on Tuesday (7), where he was received by, Chief Justice Cármen Lúcia, by Justices of the Court and the Prosecutor General of the Republic, Rodrigo Janot. The center of the conversation was the deepening of the interaction between the two countries also in the normative and legal fields.

In his first official visit to Brazil, Mauricio Macri also went to at the Planalto Palace and the National Congress, and said that the objective of the various meetings is to create concrete instruments "to face this new world", both in the commercial field – with the integration of sanitary and phytosanitary technical regulations – as in relation to drug trafficking, the space sector and others. According to the Argentine president, the idea is to move towards regulatory coherence and, consequently, legal coherence.

Justice Carmen Lúcia noted that, in the legal field, there has always been great interaction between the Brazilian and the Argentinian Judiciary Powers with other nations of Latin America, and mentioned the Supreme Courts Forum for MERCOSUR and Associate countries.

The Justice mentioned that, through the programs of exchange of magistrates, servants and students, the STF has already welcomed 19 Argentine students. She cited Mercojur, a legal report on decisions and news from the Supreme and Constitutional Courts of the Mercosur and Associated Countries, which reaches more than 400,000 readers worldwide, and the contribution of Argentina's Supreme Court of Justice to the publication.

Justices Marco Aurélio, Gilmar Mendes, Ricardo Lewandowski, Dias Toffoli, Luiz Fux, Rosa Weber, Luís Roberto Barroso and Edson Fachin emphasized the importance of exchanging ideas on issues of interest in South America – including the electoral and penal area. Fachin recalled that, on September 17, the STF will receive the visit of the president of the Supreme Court of Argentina, Ricardo Lorenzetti, who will give a speech at his invitation.

Rodrigo Janot also highlighted Argentina's interest in the Brazilian Prosecution and Judiciary's efforts to combat corruption.

At the end of the visit, Justice Carmen Lúcia offered to the Argentine president a special edition of the Constitution of the Republic and a medal of the STF, and received from him a plate, made in silver, with an inscribed message that marks the date of the State visit to the STF.
