Alexandre de Moraes takes office at 4 pm this Wednesday (22) as justice of the STF

The Plenary of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) meets in a solemn session scheduled to take place at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday (22) to inaugurate the jurist Alexandre de Moraes as the new justice of the Supreme Court. Born in São Paulo, Alexandre de Moraes is 48 years old and will be the 168th justice of the STF in the republican period. He was appointed to fill the vacancy due to the death of justice Teori Zavascki, the victim of a plane crash on 19 January.

Alexandre de Moraes was appointed by the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, on February 22, after the Constitution and Justice Commission of the Federal Senate held hearing on him and approved his name. On the same day happened the Exoneration of Alexandre de Moraes from the post of Minister of State for Justice and Public Security.
The choice of justice for the Supreme Court is a free initiative of the Presidency of the Republic between citizens aged between 35 and 65 years, notable legal knowledge and unblemished reputation, as established in article 101 of the Federal Constitution. The post of justice of the Federal Supreme Court is lifelong, but, upon reaching the age limit of 75 years, the justice retire compulsorily, as established in EC 88/2015. The new justice will join the First Panel of the Court.
