STF pays tribute to Justice Celso de Mello for his 28 years of service

In the beginning of the trial session on Thursday (17), the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) paid tribute to its most senior member, Justice Celso de Mello, for his 28 years as a member of the Court.

The Chief Justice of the STF, Cármen Lúcia, began the tributes by declaring her satisfaction in having her colleague's company, "a judge who honors any citizen of any place of the world in which the law prevails ". "I'm sure that Brazil sleeps peacefully for having among the Brazilian judges and in the Supreme Court a senior member of exemplary moral and intellectual standards and seriousness with which he conducts his position," she said.

The Prosecutor-General, Rodrigo Janot, endorsed the Chief Justice's words and noted that the career of Justice de Mello had its roots in the Prosecution Service of São Paulo. The Attorney-General, Grace Mendonça, also congratulated the Justice. "Your excellency is a reference for all of us. It is an honor for the Brazilian State, for society and for the citizen to have you with us," she said.

Other Justices also paid tribute.
