Justice Carmen Lúcia holds meeting with the head of the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region , Judge Thompson Flores

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Carmen Lúcia, held a meeting this morning (15), for about an hour, with the president of the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region (TRF-4), judge Carlos Thompson Flores. Both discussed matters relating to the integrity of the Judiciary compounds and the safety of judges. They also addressed issues related to the national prisoner registry, which is expected to be completed by the middle of this year.

Also this morning, Justice Carmen Lúcia met with the presidents of the Association of Federal Judges of Brazil (Ajufe) and the National Association of Labor Justice Judges (Anamatra), judges Roberto Carvalho Veloso and Guilherme Guimarães Feliciano. They said they had come to show support for TRF-4 judges because of news of threats motivated by the trial of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's appeal scheduled for 24/01. "Due to the threats and pressures that they're suffering, we want to show our support to the magistrates of the TRF-4 so that they can judge independently and safely", said Ajufe's president.

The representatives of the two associations informed that they will send a letter to the National Council of Justice (CNJ) to request measures regarding the protection of the courthouse and the safety of the judges and their relatives. They also stressed that the right to protest must be preserved, but acts of violence and depredations go beyond this right and should not be tolerated. The CNJ, which is also chaired by Justice Carmen Lúcia, has an exclusive department to deal with the safety of judges.
