President of Chile was welcomed at the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Cármen Lúcia, received on Friday (27) the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, who is on an official visit to Brazil after being sworn in last month. This is the second term of Piñera, who also presided over the country from 2010 to 2014. Justices Dias Toffoli and Edson Fachin also attended the reception to Piñera, as well as the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, Luciano Mariz Maia.

One of the main subjects of the meeting was TV Justiça, managed by the Supreme Court. Piñera said he watches some STF sessions live in Chile and highlighted the fact that Brazilians know all their Justices and debate the main decisions of the Court. Justice Carmen Lúcia then replied that Brazil's legal culture would not allow the votes of the Justices and the discussions not to be public. She recalled that some constitutional courts have a spokesperson who only informs the decisions made, without further details, which would be unthinkable in Brazil.

The Chilean president wanted to know details about the operation of the Brazilian Judiciary System, and Chief Justice Carmen Lúcia explained the structure of the Brazilian Justice, the role of each of its branches and highlighted the importance of the Public Prosecutor. She spoke about the organization of the National Congress and the functioning of drafting laws and amendments to the Federal Constitution. She also explained how the National Council of Justice (CNJ) works and what its responsibilities are.
