Justice Cármen Lúcia says that Brazilian laws do not consider the reality of women

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Cármen Lúcia, said that laws in Brazil does not consider the reality of women in the country. The statement was made on Thursday (10) during the opening of the panel "Women's Leadership", from "Womenwill", an event held by Google in Brasilia.

According to the Chief Justice, labor market data show that in Brazil equality has not yet occurred between men and women. "We are part of a society in which men's vision still predominates. Laws are made mostly by men without taking into account the women’s reality, which is different and adds to the men’s reality" she said.

For her, this reality is the result of enormous prejudice against women, which can be easily seen in the labor market. Justice Cármen Lúcia recalled that although women in Brazil are statistically majority in terms of intellectual qualification, this is not yet reflected in the labor market. "This is the demonstration that equality between men and women has not happened yet," she said.

Noting that we live in a time of rapid change, Justice Cármen Lúcia emphasized the importance of continuous learning. "All the knowledge we get when we go to sleep is not enough when we wake up the next day. The first commandment seems to be: learn to know. Every day we have to learn, and learning nowadays is not only about one subject, what we learn for our profession, but about many areas, expanding our knowledge more and more to the world", she recalled.

The STF's Chief Justice of the also stressed the need to apply knowledge in practice. "We need to learn how to do. There's no use in learning and locking it up like an idea in the head. We learn in order to turn our learning a new way of thinking. The thought becomes the idea, the idea becomes a desire and desire becomes the action", she said.

For Justice Cármen Lúcia, when the person learns to learn, and makes use of what she has learned, she relearns to be. "We reinvent ourselves with the knowledge that is brought to us with this new way of doing", she concluded.
