Chief Justice Dias Toffoli presents advances and challenges of the Brazilian Constitution in the European Commission for Democracy through Law

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Dias Toffoli, will participate this Friday (19) and Saturday (20) in Venice, Italy, of the 116th Plenary Session of the European Commission for Democracy by Law Venice. In his speech, Justice Toffoli will make a long presentation on the constitutional order in Brazil.

In this context, Chief Justice Dias Toffoli will present the Brazilian experience, especially at the time of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution. The president will discuss the progress made since the enactment of the Federal Constitution, as well as the challenges to be faced in the future.

The Venice Commission it's an autonomous body of advice to the Council of Europe on constitutional matters, including fundamental rights, electoral legislation and the functioning of democratic institutions.

The international adviser of the STF, Mr. Fábio Mendes Marzano, recalls that the organ was created in 1990, based on a very specific emergency demand from the countries of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall. "These countries became independent and needed to establish a new legal order. The rest of Europe, interested in helping these countries to stabilize, decided to create the Commission ".
