Justice imposes measures against overcrowding in four more teenage detention units

Justice Edson Fachin of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) has established the adoption of several measures in favor of adolescents in detention units in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco. The rapporteur granted an extension request in Habeas Corpus (HC) 143988, in which the occupancy rate in the Northern Regional Internment Unit (Uninorte) in Linhares (ES) was delimeted by 119% and determined the transfer of surplus adolescents to other units that are not with occupancy higher than the fixed rate.

In the request, the Public Deffender's offices maintain that the socio-educational systems of its states present a "calamitous situation of true unconstitutionality, defiling the dignity of the human person and any minimum system of protection for adolescents" and that the motives that led to the concession of the injunction to the benefit of the adolescents detained in Espírito Santo are also found in their federative units.
