Chief Justice Dias Toffoli defends a greater participation of women in politics

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Dias Toffoli, said on Wednesday (3), in a meeting with the female bench of the National Congress, that the Judiciary has made progress in affirming women's political participation rights. He mentioned as an example the judgment of the Direct Action for the Declaration of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 5617 by the STF in 2018.

In the occasion, the Plenary stressed out the legitimacy of a minimum percentage of women candidates and reaffirmed the importance of guaranteeing a minimum percentage of 30% of the party fund resources for women candidates and ensuring the application of legislation, especially regarding the allocation of these resources.

The Supreme Court's Chief Justice also said that the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE), chaired by Justice Rosa Weber, ruled that parties should guarantee at least 30% of the Special Electoral Fund and free advertising time for women candidates.
