Dias Toffoli attends round table at the German Constitutional Court

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Dias Toffoli, was on Tuesday (15) at the Superior Court of Justice and the Federal Constitutional Court in the city of Karlsruhe. At the German STJ (Superior Court of Justice), Toffoli learned about the institution's operations and participated in a roundtable discussion on experiences and challenges common to the Constitutional Courts.

“We have developed a very intense dialogue with the German Courts, and the conclusion we have come to is that we face similar challenges in a world in which the Supreme and Constitutional Courts are convened by society to resolve complex and controversial issues,” said Dias Toffoli.

Among the similarities between the two countries, the Brazilian Chief Justice highlighted the judgments of conflicts between state bodies and the institution's role in disputes involving federation units and their political-administrative, legislative and tax competences.

During the roundtable with judges of the Federal Constitutional Court, the Chief Justice of the STF, alongside the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Andreas Vosskuhle, presented the competences of the Supreme Court. "By learning more about the Brazilian judiciary branch, German judges get impressed by the number of cases that each court and judge try each year in Brazil."

The Brazilian delegation is also composed of Justices and Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), João Otávio de Noronha; by federal judges and by the president of the Association of Federal Judges of Brazil (Ajufe), Fernando Mendes.
