Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) presents 2019 activity report and registers smaller collection of lawsuits in 20 years

The Chief Justice of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF), Justice Dias Toffoli, released on Monday (3) the Court's 2019 Activities Report. According to the data, last year the Court registered the lowest amount of proceedings in the last 20 years, with 31,279 cases in progress, a 19.12% reduction compared to 2018.

"The country's Supreme Court has masterfully exercised its mission of guarding the Federal Constitution," he said. For the Chief Justice, the results of the Court in 2019 show a strategic vision and demonstrate that the STF has advanced towards a jurisdictional provision of excellence, adopting efficiency, transparency and responsibility as management pillars.

The Chief justice pointed out that the Court faced an extensive list of controversial, complex issues with great political, social, economic and cultural impact. It decided the general repercussion cases with the largest number of proceedings suspended in the courts of origin and, in this way, "pacified conflicts, stabilized institutional relations and established action guidelines for institutions and society, promoting legal security and guaranteeing fundamental rights".

In addition to the decrease in the number of lawsuits in progress since 2016, with an approximate 50% reduction in the general acquis, the STF issued 115,603 decisions in 2019, of which 97,908 were monocratic (decided individually by the Justices) and 17,695 were collegiate (taken by the Plenary and by the two Chambers) - a number 21.74% higher than the previous year. The data also shows the completion of 96,896 cases and the reception of 93,197 cases, a reduction of 8%, considering the year of 2018.

The STF also implemented administrative and technological modernization projects focused on management by strategic projects and work processes, which contributed to the improvement of processing and judgment tools for proceedings.
