Bill foresees the creation of a committee to confront the coronavirus

The Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Planalto Palace forwarded an emergency bill to the National Congress in order to create the National Committee of Justice and Control Organs, amending Law 13.979/2020 on measures to confront the outbreak caused by the new coronavirus. The initiative was announced in a ceremony on Wednesday (18) with the participation of the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and President the National Council of Justice (CNJ), Justice Dias Toffoli.

"The Committee will have the function of promoting institutional dialogue between the organs of justice and control, at the federal level, to prevent or resolve disputes related to confronting the public health emergency arising from the coronavirus," said Toffoli. He highlighted the need for the Brazilian justice system to meet the demands that will arise during this period and emphasized: "Justice will not stop".

The Federal Attorney General, André Mendonça, foresees an increase in questions from the federal justice and control agencies, making it necessary to be agile in adopting measures and administrative acts that are technically justified and indispensable for public health. In addition to the STF, CNJ and AGU, the committee includes the Court of Audit of the Union (TCU), the Federal General Prosecutor's Office, the National Council of the Public Ministry, the Comptroller's Office and the Public Defender's Office.

For Mendonça, the proposal contributes to the improvement of public policies related to the confrontation of the disease while the international state of emergency persists, a period in which the Committee should continue. The Bill was one of the initiatives discussed at a meeting held last Tuesday (17) among representatives of the bodies that make up the group.
