Videoconferencing sessions to start next week

The BraziIian Federal Supreme Court (STF) has scheduled for next week the first regular videoconferencing sessions of the plenary and its two chambers, as an additional step to maintain its regular proceedings and ensure access to justice while measures of social distancing are in place. The chambers will hold their sessions on April 14, and the plenary will deliberate through videoconferencing in meetings scheduled for April 15 and 16. Legal matters related to the efforts aimed at tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in the country will be addressed during the plenary sessions.

Videoconferencing is an additional tool for the Court, which has enhanced the already existing online mechanisms for daily proceedings since March. The so called “virtual plenary”, a platform for online deliberations made available in 2007 and used since then on a regular basis by the plenary and the chambers, has been applied to a broader range of cases while social distancing measures are in place. As a result, the Court has issued a total of 640 collegiate decisions in two weeks, from March 20 to April 2.

Technological and regulatory adjustments have been made in order to enable the participation of the prosecution and legal representatives of the parties involved in the cases, through audio and video recordings for the virtual sessions, and through the tool for real time access for the videoconferencing sessions.
