Responsible for the urgent cases that reach the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) during the forensic vacation (July 2-31), the Chief Justice of the court, Dias Toffoli, analyzed 7,423 cases during the period. A total of 4,836 decisions were rendered, a 128% increase over July 2019. Of the total of 4,730 cases received during the month, 538 were related to the new coronavirus pandemic, with 325 decisions in those cases to date.
Among the original cases filed in July, that is, those that the STF itself had initial jurisdiction to rule on the case, there was a 26.2% increase over last year - there were 1,780 original cases received in July this year and 1,411 in 2019.
The Chief Justice's power to decide urgent cases is established in the STF's Rules of Procedure (article 13). Based on this provision, the Justice also issued 2,587 orders.
