At the opening ceremony of the Judicial Year, OAB and PGR sympathize with the victims of Covid-19

In the solemn session of the opening of the Judicial Year 2021, held on the morning of Monday (1st), in the plenary of the Supreme Court ob Brazil (STF) and by means of videoconference, the president of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Felipe Santa Cruz, opened his speech by offering condolences to the relatives and friends of the more than 224 thousand Brazilians killed in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The session was opened by the Chief Justice of the Court, Luiz Fux, and the Presidents of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, and the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, who composed the Honorary Table, also participated in attendance. The STF Justices Nunes Marques, Luís Roberto Barroso, Rosa Weber (Deputy Chief Justice) and Dias Toffoli attended the ceremony presentially, while the other Justices and the Attorney General (PGR), Augusto Aras, accompanied the session by videoconference.

Right to life

In the name of advocacy, Felipe Santa Cruz also greeted scientists and health professionals and the hope of effective vaccination as the only way to resume economic growth and job creation and also as a way to relieve the pressure on the health system. For Santa Cruz, the sanitary, social and economic crisis is also bordering on a humanitarian crisis. "Not understanding the dimension of this tragedy is denying our own human condition," he said. He defended that the application of constitutional principles of valuing life, health, and human rights is the way to move away "obscurantism and negationism" to guarantee Brazilians the inalienable right to life.

He highlighted the fundamental role of the Supreme Court as guardian of the Federal Constitution, the Democratic State of Law, and the institutional balance during the pandemic, and stressed that the decisions of the STF saved thousands of lives. Finally, he recalled that, exactly 34 years ago, the National Constituent Assembly was installed in the National Congress to draft the new Charter of the Republic, restoring and consolidating democracy in the country and concluded that this "is the legacy that we have the duty to preserve.

In his speech, the Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, also paid tribute to the relatives of the Covid-19 victims and the health professionals who are at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic. He affirmed that the Public Prosecutor's Office is closely following and investigating the appropriate responsibilities for the collective health crisis in the Northern Region. "We are fighting disease, inefficiency and corruption," he said.

Aras congratulated Justice Luiz Fux for including in the first half of the year's trial agenda actions that deal with fundamental rights, especially those related to the pandemic, and that influence economic development. He also remembered other themes that will be discussed, such as the recognition of the right to forget in the civil sphere, the division of oil royalties and intermittent work. "May 2021 be the year of tolerance, respect for diversity, progress and social peace," concluded the attorney general.
