 JOAQUIM BENEDITO BARBOSA GOMES

"The success of democracy depends on actions from the State towards the promotion of an administrative procedure, that is subject to the control by democratic, transparent organs, which are widely accessible to people." (Direct Action of Unconstitutionality 1.976/Distrito Federal).

He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on June 25th, 2003. He took office as president of the Court on November 22nd, 2012.
He graduated in Law from the University of Brasília.
Justice Joaquim Barbosa was born in Paracatu, State of Minas Gerais, on October 10th, 1954.

 

 

ENRIQUE RICARDO LEWANDOWSKI

"(...) Human dignity, not only constitutes the core of fundamental rights, it equally configurates one of the pillars of Republic itself". (Direct Action of Unconstitutionality 3.510/ Rio de Janeiro).

He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on March 16th, 2006. He took office as vice-president of the Court on November 22nd, 2012.
Justice Ricardo Lewandowski was born in Rio de Janeiro on May 11th, 1948.
He graduated in Law from the Faculdade de Direito São Bernardo do Campo.

 

 

JOSÉ CELSO DE MELLO FILHO

"The Supreme Federal Court – guardian of the Constitution by expressed dele­gation from the Constitution – cannot resign its charge, because, if the Supreme Federal Court fails to perform this most serious attribution granted by the Constitution, the integrity of the political system, the protection of the public liberties, the stability of the legal system and the legitimacy of the Republican Institutions will be deeply compromised." Justice Celso de Mello was born in Tatuí, State of São Paulo, on November 1st, 1945.
He graduated in Juridical and Social Sciences from the Faculty of Law of the Universidade de São Paulo, the traditional Faculty of Law, at the Largo de São Francisco.
He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on August 17th, 1989, being the Court's Chief Justice from 1997 to 1999. At the age of 51, he was the youngest Court's President since the foundation of the Supreme Court of Justice, during the Empire.

 

 

MARCO AURÉLIO MENDES DE FARIAS MELLO

"The politics of transparency – understood as the one based on explicitness, clarity and truthfulness of the information given to the collectivity – should guide the entire democratic electoral system." (Inquiry 1.884/Rio Grande do Sul).

Justice Marco Aurélio was born in Rio de Janeiro on July 12th, 1946.
He graduated in Juridical and Social Sciences from the Faculty of Law of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on June 13th, 1990, being the Court's Chief Justice from 2001 to 2003.

 

 

GILMAR FERREIRA MENDES

"Supreme Federal Court shows with this trial that it can, indeed, be a House of the People, just like the Parliament. Justice Gilmar Mendes was born in Diamantino, State of Mato Grosso, on December 30th, 1955.
He graduated in Law from the Universidade de Brasília.
He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on June 20th, 2002.

 

 

CÁRMEN LÚCIA ANTUNES ROCHA

Justice Cármen Lúcia was born in Montes Claros, State of Minas Gerais, on April 19th, 1954.
She graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law of the Pontifícia Universidade Ca­tólica de Minas Gerais.
She took her seat on the Supreme Federal Court on June 21st, 2006.

 

 

JOSÉ ANTONIO DIAS TOFFOLI

"Society has changed and the Judiciary Power, which is so assertive in the defense of communicative freedom, cannot act for the benefit of its members, in contradiction to the founding constitutional values of the Democratic State of Law." ( Provisional Remedy in Writ of Mandamus 28.390)

Justice Dias Toffoli was born in Marilia, State of Sao Paulo, on November 15th, 1967.
He graduated in Faculy of Law from the University of Sao Paulo – USP.
He was Deputy Head of Legal Affairs of the Civil House of Republic Presidency from January of 2003 to July of 2005. He was Advocate-General of the Union from March of 2007 to October of 2009.
He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on October 23rd, 2009.
 

 

LUIZ FUX

Justice Luiz Fux was born in Rio de Janeiro on April 26th, 1953.
He graduated in Juridical Sciences from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Court on March 3rd, 2011.


 

 

ROSA MARIA WEBER CANDIOTA DA ROSA

"Without the minimal equality of opportunity, there is no equality of liberty. The courses of action, the life choices, the worldviews, the economic chances of individual or collective specific manifestations are much more restricted for those that, under the presumption of equality, do not have their particular conditions taken into account.”

Justice Rosa Weber was born in Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul on October 2nd, 1948.
She graduated from Juridical Sciences from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.
She took her seat on the Supreme Federal Court on December 19th, 2011.

 

 

TEORI ALBINO ZAVASCKI

“The new constitutional framework established in our country will only acquire effectiveness if it is understood and absorbed in all its potentialities. In this purpose, we claim from the interpreter and the law enforcer the understanding of the new law from the values and paradigms established by himself, something that requires an exercise of intellectual freedom and courage to, if necessary, abandon the old preconceived notions”.(Effectiveness of judgments in constitutional adjudication, 2nd ed., SP: RT, p. 119)

Justice Teori Zavascki was born in Faxinal dos Guedes, State of Santa Catarina on August 15, 1948.
He graduated from Juridical and Social Sciences from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.
He took his seat on the Supreme Federal Cout on November 29th, 2012.

 

LUÍS ROBERTO BARROSO

Took office as Justice of the Supreme Court of Brazil on June 26, 2013.

His Excellency holds a Law degree from the State University of Rio de Janeiro - UERJ - 1980.

Justice Luís Roberto Barroso was born in Vassouras, Rio de Janeiro, on March 11, 1958.
